Garage Door Emergency Release Cord

Garage Door Emergency Release Cord Repair

An emergency release cord is a mandatory safety feature present in all modern garage doors. It allows you to open the garage door manually in case of an emergency.

It’s a red cord that hangs from the trolley (typically located near the motor) that moves the door along the track. Pulling the cord disengages the door from the motor, allowing the door to be manually opened.

If you have any concerns regarding the safety of your garage door system or emergency release cord, call Precision today!

Do You Need a Replacement?

Garage door emergency release cords are designed to be durable and hold up to regular use, but they’re still susceptible to wear like all components.

There are several reasons an emergency release cord could break or fail, including:

  • The age of the emergency release cord – Over time, the cord may become worn or brittle or frayed, making it more susceptible to breaking.
  • Improper use – Pulling on the cord at an angle or applying excessive force can lead to damage or breakage. It’s important to use the cord correctly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Rust or corrosion on the trolley – Regular maintenance, such as lubrication and regular Tune-Ups, can help prevent rust and excess friction.

The emergency release cord makes it possible to open the garage even if there’s a power outage, your opener stops working, or you have a broken spring. It’s best to call the pros right away if it’s not working properly.

How to Use the Emergency Release Cord

It’s not recommended to use the emergency release cord unless absolutely necessary. If you need to get your vehicle out before someone can come inspect your door, you can follow these steps to use it safely.

1. Be sure the door is closed – Garage doors are large and heavy, and they can crash down if the cord is released when they’re open. Never attempt to use the emergency release cord unless the door is completely closed.

2. Pull the emergency release cord – Once you’ve located the cord, pull it downward with a firm, steady motion. This will disengage the door from the motor and allow you to lift it manually.

3. Lift the door – The garage door may be heavy, so use caution when lifting it manually. Grip the door handle firmly and lift it straight up. If the door is too heavy or you’re having difficulty lifting it, do not continue and wait for help instead.

4. Close the door when finished – To close the door manually, lower it slowly and carefully until it’s back in place.

5. Re-engage the motor – Once power is restored or the motor issue is fixed, you’ll need to re-engage the motor before using the door again. Pull the emergency release cord toward the door until you hear a clicking sound. This indicates that the door is once again connected to the motor.
